A Chaplain's Way of Life

Former Mission Director Rev. Bill Fleming greets crew with puzzles to help stave off boredom during long days at sea.

CHAPLAIN FOR A DAY

What is the Chaplain For A Day Program?

An opportunity for pastors to spend time in the seaport with a Mission Director or chaplain to experience the ministry of Seafarer’s Friend.

Goal

To educate pastors and leaders of local churches about maritime ministry through a first hand experience in the routine of a day’s activity.

What makes the experience special?

  • One gains insight into the “ministry of hospitality” as both host and guest.

  • One receives an international, ecumenical, and interfaith perspective on ministry and mission.

  • One is exposed to an experience of workplace ministry.

  • One sees first-hand how ministry is often multi-dimensional.

  • One has a short-term mission trip without leaving the USA.

  • One learns of the system of marine industry that is integral to our economy.

What is expected?

  • A minimum of 6.5 hours; typically weekdays 9 am to 3:30 pm. (evening hours may be possible.)

  • Must be in good physical condition; able to climb several flights of stairs easily.

  • Orientation and an opportunity for a time of reflection is included in this time period.

Typical Day's Schedule

Begin the day with an overview of Seafarer’s Ministry.

A tour of the port area provides understanding of maritime life.

Visit a ship with the chaplain to see seafarers first-hand (providing a ship is in port and cleared for them to visit according to security and terminal protocols).

Conclude the day with debriefing and the daily “change of shift” worship.

Space is Limited

We want to make this as enriching an experience as possible Therefore, each port region has space for only two Chaplains for a Day each month (Chelsea and Portland/Portsmouth).
