Our First Annual SEAFARER’S FRIEND CROW’S NEST CRUISE was a huge success! Our thanks and appreciation to all who attended.  Your support of the seafarers and our ministry is much appreciated and we will continue to work to help the seafarers who ensure so many of our comforts with their sacrifices.

Enjoy the pictures taken from the Cruise!

Ron's presence at the helm of shiploading operations for Schnitzer, Everett has significantly improved the emotional and overall welfare of seafarers visiting the Everett terminal.  Prior to his assuming the position of Foreman shore access for seafarers was difficult and costly.  While chaplains could visit the crew, shore access required heavy costs that few vessels paidMost often chaplains visited seafarers frustrated from being confined to the ship after spending weeks at sea and in sight of downtown Boston.

One year after taking over the helm of loading/operations in 2008 significant change occurred at the terminal.  Gradually chaplains were allowed to escort crew members ashore and soon Ron was calling to request chaplains come to visit and transport crew. This was a dramatic change from previous years and has resulted in the improved emotional welfare of seafarers.

Ron’s continual enthusiastic and cordial support of the mission of chaplains and concern for the welfare of visiting seafarers has been a blessing to many. His welcoming attitude and recognition of the importance of chaplains and shore leave for crew is a wonderful improvement for crew on vessels arriving at the scrap terminal, and improved the perception of many seafarers regarding US treatment of international seafarers. Ron has exemplified a genuine compassion for the seagoing mariner, and awareness that their chance to have shore leave is vital to mental, emotional, and overall welfare. The experience of visiting seafarers to the Schnitzer terminal has improved 180 degrees in one year.

On behalf of seafarers visiting and yet to visit the Everett terminal, the Board of Directors and the Chaplains of Seafarer’s Friend this award of gratitude is presented to Ron Strauss. He has been a welcoming ambassador, a concerned citizen on a world scale, and has made a significant improvement in the welfare and life of seafarers visiting the port of Boston. His concern for others is well-deserving of the Seafarer’s Friend Chaplains’ Award for the year 2009 as has made a difference in the lives of many from around the world who make their living at sea.

Thank you!
