The William Fleming Fund, Growing Leaders in Maritime
Ministry
A New Focus
Before Rev. Bill Fleming passed, he, in
cooperation with the administration at Seafarer's Friend, set up a fund
devoted to the mentoring and training of future ministry students. This
new chaplain training program intends to expose Christians to maritime
life and build experiences that encourage a new generation of Christian
leaders. Clergy and laity will grow spiritually while participating in
ministry to seafarers. It will be a means of establishing partnership
with congregations, and ultimately, building partnerships across the
seas and cultures. The fund will fulfill Bill's vision to impart the
chaplaincy concepts and skills that he fine tuned as Mission Director to
a new generation.
Purpose
The fund's purpose is to provide program and staffing opportunities
that encourage and train leaders with a maritime focus. We will
offer hands-on training that encompasses the elements of course work,
theological reflection, and personal spiritual growth as bridges are
built between the church and the maritime world.
Implementation
Funds will be part of the endowment of Seafarer's Friend, governed
by the Board of Directors and administered by the Executive Director.
Vision
The vision is to raise $500,000, but at least $300,000 is needed to
provide the basic needs.
-
Raising $300,000 will help 3-5 students and a dozen
volunteers grow in their spiritual life and multicultural experience
each year.
-
$100,000 will provide a mentor/coordinator for
participants.
-
Every $50,000 in the fund will allow one mentored
ministry student to experience maritime life for one year.
-
Every $25,000 in the fund will allow one person to
attend the Houston Maritime Chaplains School.
-
Gifts of $1,000 or less assist in sending students to
training or providing books that open the maritime world to them.
