Seafarers Explore Boston with Seafarer's Friend by Susan Lane

Recently, the Chaplains at Seafarer's friend have been called upon to extend their service to crew staying in local hotels due to assist in a federal trial. Spending an undefined amount of time in local hotels as the legal process moves forward is difficult for these men, who are preparing for a long stay. Similar proceedings have taken six months or more.

One of the many challenges in a situation like that described above is that able-bodied men who are used to being productive are now placed in a position to be idle. Fortunately, the chaplains at Seafarer's Friend have been able to accommodate these men with van rides to area shopping and attractions. Seafarers have enjoyed visiting places like Harvard, Boston University, the New England Aquarium, and Faneuil Hall.

Another crucial service is chaplaincy itself. The crew are stranded in their hotel rooms for hours at times. Add that to being trapped in a foreign country, away from family, for months on end, and you can begin to understand why a person's spirit would become depleted. The chaplaincy services at Seafarer's Friend have proven to be an important resource by allowing God to bolster these men at a difficult time through chaplains like Rev. Nizzi Santos Digan (pictured above).

Caring for these men takes resources, both human and financial. If you or your church would like to join us in assisting these men, please contact us about volunteer opportunities at (617) 889-3222.
